Gentse Strop

A 6.9% Belgian Style Ales Style Belgian Ale from Belgium, usually available at The Blackfriars Tavern in Great Yarmouth, FB: BlackfriarsTavern

Gentse Strop is a blond Belgian speciality beer with high fermentation and
bottle fermentation. It has a fruity aroma and subtle hopping. It owes its
name to the proud people of Ghent, nicknamed Òslings carriersÓ.The beer is brewed by Brouwerij Roman, established in Mater, a borough of
Oudenaard. Oudenaarde and Ghent have a rich history as a pivotal figure in
common with Charles. The revolt of Ghent in 1540 against Charles V gave
them their nickname Òslings carriersÓ but Oudenaarde is also the birthplace
of the illegitimate daughter of Charles, Margaret of Parma. And then
thereÕs the Oudenaardse figure Hanske Warrior who was the lookout but
because he had drunk too much beer fell and sleep and so had not seen how
Charles and his troops invaded the city of Oudenaarde. As the icing on the cake, the historic year of 1545 was also the year that
the Roman family brewery started.

De Dolle Oerbier

A 9% Belgian Style Ales Style Belgian Strong Ale from Belgium, usually available at The Blackfriars Tavern in Great Yarmouth, FB: BlackfriarsTavern

Oerbier means original, from the source. This beer has been brewed in small
scale (5 gallons) at home in a copper wash kettle, by two brothers who were
students at the time. They took over an old brewery which was out of
business and said: “If we don’t bring the brewery back to life, nobody
will!” It was also a unique opportunity to create some interesting brews,
so why not try it? Therefore we went ahead. We did the main work ourselves
and kept the scale of the brewery as it was. Since then, the brewery and
its beers have been an inspiration for a lot of brewers. Oerbier is brewed
from all different malts, Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special
yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery
we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8¡C allowing
Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it has been blended with wineÉ
Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast,
having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a
warning for the 9 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is
the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right
hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the
result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a
wall painting found in Spain (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as
being the best prehistoric art work (30.000 years BC). On the other hand we
have Oerbier started in 1980, continuing the tradition.Since 2000 as the yeast supply ceased, we installed a new yeast propagator.
The tart aftertaste is obtained by lacto bacterial fermentation (since
2005).

The Blackfriars Tavern Brews Commemorative Ale for Herring Bridge Opening

Celebrating Great Yarmouth’s Heritage with Exclusive ‘Herring Bridge Pale Ale’

SUMMARY The Blackfriars Tavern, an award-winning pub known for its dedication to Real Ales and Still Ciders, is proud to announce the brewing of a special English Pale Ale – the Herring Bridge Pale Ale. This exclusive brew celebrates the opening of the Herring Bridge in Great Yarmouth on February 1, 2024. This celebration beer not only highlights the Tavern’s unique brewing capabilities but also pays homage to the town’s rich herring industry heritage.

[GREAT YARMOUTH, 1/Feb/2024]: In recognition of the opening of the Herring Bridge, The Blackfriars Tavern, an esteemed establishment holding titles like “CAMRA runner up pub of the year 2022 and 2023” and “CAMRA runner up cider pub of the year 2023” introduces the Herring Bridge Pale Ale. Crafted by Pharez Smith, the owner and brewer at The Blackfriars Tavern, this session pale ale boasts a 3.9% ABV, making it an ideal choice for those wanting a session pale ale.

Brewed with local Norfolk grain, the Herring Bridge Pale Ale not only embodies the region’s brewing tradition but also captures the essence of Great Yarmouth’s historical connection to the herring industry. During the early 20th century, Great Yarmouth’s quaysides were bustling with drifters returning from the North Sea, laden with herring. This new bridge, aptly named after the industry that once thrived in the area, is a testament to the town’s enduring spirit.

Pharez Smith comments, “At The Blackfriars Tavern, we’re not just brewing beer; we’re weaving the story and heritage of Great Yarmouth into every pint. The Herring Bridge Pale Ale is a tribute to the hardworking men and women who shaped our town’s history, and we’re proud to be part of this new chapter with the opening of the Herring Bridge.”
