Apple scratting day at the Blackfriars Tavern! 🍎

Two of our lovely regulars popped by with a couple of sacks of eating apples—an absolutely gorgeous deep red—and put our cider apple scratter through its paces. A bit of chopping, a satisfying turn of the handle, and… voilà: two full buckets of fresh chopped apple, ready to take home and press.

If you’ve got a windfall to use up, ask at the bar about using the scratter. Community kit, community cider. 🥂

A metal apple scratter with a wide, grey hopper sits on a wooden pallet frame beside a white brick wall. A small pile of red-skinned apple slices rests in the hopper, ready to be cranked through the gears.
Close view of the work area: a black bucket perched on the wooden cider press frame, a large paper sack brimming with deep-red eating apples, and a second empty bucket on the ground near several stainless steel beer casks. A person’s hands hold a knife, mid-chop.
Looking down into a black bucket positioned under the scratter chute. It’s filling with freshly shredded apple—white flesh and red peel—while stray bits of pulp are scattered on the wooden platform around it.
Two black buckets side by side from above: the back bucket is heaped with moist, chopped apple pulp (red peel pieces visible throughout); the front bucket contains unprocessed wedges. A person’s hands are slicing more apples into the front bucket.
